ABSTRACT. An essay of the life and activity of Moscow entomologist Eugeny Sergeevich Smirnov (1898–1979), head of the Department of Entomology, Moscow Lomonosov State University, is presented. Unfortunately, his multifarious research and spiritual heritage have yet been revealed insufficiently well. Papers by E.S. Smirnov on the theory of taxonomy and the Lamarckian direction of evolutionary theory are characterized against the background of the struggle of ideas in Soviet biology in the 1920’s to 1950\s. Translations of R. Steiner’s papers E.S. Smirnov provided in the 1940’s to 1950’s are briefly described.

KEY WORDS: entomology, taxonomy, history of science, anthroposophy.
